San Jose Permits and Who Pulls Them

San Jose issues building permits through its Planning, Building and Code Enforcement department, with applications starting at SJPermits.org. Dozens of simple project types, including minor kitchen and bath remodels on houses and multifamily buildings, can be permitted online. Bigger remodels, structural changes and most commercial work go through plan review, with plans uploaded to SJePlans.

The City only issues online permits to property owners or licensed contractors who hold a City of San Jose business tax certificate, and the permit holder carries liability for the work. We tell you up front who pulls the permit on your job. Some addresses in the middle of San Jose are unincorporated county pockets, and those go through Santa Clara County instead. We check the parcel first.
